Slept like a baby last night. It was really quiet out. Sometime during the evening I heard hikers set up. They were still sleeping this morning when I headed off but I’m sure I will see them again. It seems to just work that way. You catch up to people or get passed by hikers and then reconnect again a bit down the track.
I had an OSM bar for breakfast and don’t feel like a coffee so packing up camp was quick this morning. My tent was wet and needed a big shake. I tried to do this quietly and I hope I didn’t wake the other hikers.
Today was full on steep. It truly felt like it was just straight up. The summit was 744m. And there wasn’t a lot of gap in the tree line either to take in any views. Between the closed in bush and the clouds, it turned out easier to just focus on getting up and over.
I took a heap of breaks today and just plodded along. The trail was fairly muddy and it was tough going. Just before I stopped for lunch, (flatbread and peanut butter) the two hikers from last night passed me. A nice couple from Sweden. They were powered off up the hill after a quick yarn.
Finally I was over the top and then down. Came out through a cow paddock and then it was on to the road. The road walking is tough on the feet. I was headed to a dairy (like a corner store) in a small village but I knew it would be closed by the time I got there. It was a big one today. 13 hours.
It was a bit muddy. The best hint I can give is to just accept it. Walk in it. Don’t expend energy trying to get around it. Just embrace the slog through the bog (hey, I’m a poet!)
Argh!!
