Day 8 Ahipara to Raetea Forest 33k, TA 113.5

Not quite the walk in the park.

Today was lots of road walking. The weather included scattered clouds, some rain and it was a bit hot. Weirdly, the sun is hot but the breeze is still quite cool. It was very much an on/off day with the rain jacket getting a bit of a run.

Today seemed to take forever. First up it was 15km into Kaitaia (yes, I’m still up in this region!) and then a bit of a workaround to the trailhead because of the closed section of the Herekino Forest. It included 5km along state highway 1, the notes said to get a lift along this section but it wasn’t too bad if you stayed alert and looked out for the traffic. Then 6km to Takahu Rd, 4K to Takahu and then around 2kish along the river to Warner Rd. I camped up not far from here.

I have changed up my food. Dinner tonight was noodles. My insides have decided that store bought dehydrated food should stay on the outside so resupply will now consist of whatever I can find in local stores that can be easily made up on my camp stove. Not to mention lightweight, I do have to carry it after all!
