Off the beach! Thanks 90 mile . It’s been real. 100.5 km worth of real!
So real that I forgot to mention something important that happened on day 2.
Before I left on this trip, I did a heap of research, planning and learning. This included updating my first aid certificate, river crossing skills and map reading. I figured this was insurance. Because I had done the prep, it was therefore likely I wouldn’t need it.
I also went to my doc to get the all clear to head off. This included talking through my first aid kit, making sure I had the basics.
I have two, probably not rational, fears for this trip. Getting stung by a wasp and being caught in a lightening storm.
So I asked my doc if I needed an epipen.
Yes. I know. What the?
But I had read blogs of other hikers and some had been stung and I didn’t know if I was allergic, hence the question about the epipen.
My doc assured me that a) it was unlikely to happen and b) also unlikely I was allergic.
Well, guess what? I was stung by a wasp on day two.
On the neck, no less.
And yay... not allergic! :-)
This is me at the start, happy and looking forward to walking 90 Mile Beach.
And me at the end, pretty happy to be off 90 Mile Beach.
Sunburned (despite a hat and sunscreen) tired and with skin like sandpaper. The fine sand stuck to my sweaty and sunscreened skin. Not to be recommended as your ‘go to’ exfoliation treatment.
