I had a great night’s sleep at Kevin and Denise’s place at Houhora. I just put my head down and I was out to it. A combination, I think, of working right up until the night before I flew out, the time difference, starting on trail as soon as possible and then a scratchy night sleep first night in camp. Maybe the very good NZ sav blanc played a small part too.
Kevin did a fry up for breakfast and there was heaps of great coffee.
It was so good yarning with these two. I felt like I had known them for years. They had worked hard all of their lives and had retired in Northland near family and friends. They spend a lot of time on the beach fishing or harvesting other seafood. Very near to where they live, the East and West coasts of NZ are only 14kms apart. They can choose which side of the coast to fish from depending on swell, tide and weather. Perfect!
Kevin and Denise toured me through the local region after breakfast, showing me the new large avo farms that were bringing new jobs to the region as well as the largest dairy farm in the north. It is such pretty country. Just paradise.
We stopped for a coffee and then mid afternoon, they dropped me at accommodation in Kaitaia.
Truly, these two deserve many blessings. Kevin and Denise, I wish you tight lines and many sunny days.
And Tom, this photo is for you. Look who will be playing in Kaitaia?
Met this big fella in Kaitaia
